About Mathruchaya Balabhavan
Mathruchaya, a project of Grama Seva Samithi, a trust registerd under Charitable Societies Act and manages different institutions, is situated at the panoramic village of Chowara, 12km east of aluva, 8km west of Kalady, the birth place of Adisankara and 6km from the Nedumbassery International Airport. The building on the bank of river Periar was the ancient summer palace of Shakthan Thampuran, the King of Kochi.
At present there are about 60 inmates, all boys, between the age of 10 and 20 years, hailing from the under privileged sections of the society, especially those belonging to the SC/ST/ADIVASI/VANAVASI class. They are provided with everything they need- food, clothing, shelter and education.
Deepavali, the festival of lights is celebrated as ‘Mathruchaya Day’ every year and service minded people from different walks of life arrive in a mood of pilgrimage and offer help. As you are aware, running an institution like Mathruchaya needs a lot of money. Since the project is non-productive raising funds is difficult forever self sufficiency in financial needs remains a distant dream. It is essential to have a corpus fund to fall back on in times of need.
Well wishers from far and near are making significant contributions by way of donations in cash and kind. Many families also make it a point to call at us in connection with birthdays, housewarmings, marriages and other important occasions to meet the expenses of the Balabhavan for the day. These are encouraging indications that the message of the Bhavan is spreading far and wide. Occasional visits by spiritual mentors and important persons in the social and cultural fields very much help the personality development of the inmates.
